Libya is not safe to return migrants to, UNHCR tells Salvini

migrantsUnited Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has stressed that Libya is not a safe country to send migrants back to.

Grandi was responding to a question on the position taken on the issue by Italian deputy prime minister and interior minister Matteo Salvini. He added that people were staying in appalling conditions in many detention centers in the country and that he had only rarely in his life seen such harsh conditions.

The High Commissioner added that EU solidarity had not yet been seen and that a mechanism to distribute the migrants who land on Italian shores was needed to avoid crises like the recent one with the Diciotti coast guard ship.
