A Nigerian wept tears of joy and expressed gratitude repeatedly after being freed of a drug trafficking charge without his defence called by a High Court here.

Student Joseph Metuh Onyinye, 35, was seen wiping away his tears and thanking everyone as he exited the court a free man.

He was, however, handcuffed a short while after his release by officers from the Immigration Department as his visa had expired.

Justice Datuk Lim Chong Fong acquitted Onyinye of the charge of trafficking in 1.8kg of methamphetamine at the Miami Green Resort Condominium in Batu Ferringhi, at 3.10pm on Oct 31, 2014.

In his decision, Justice Lim said the prosecution had not proven possession, as the parcel was still unopened and intact at the time of Onyinye’s arrest.
