Two MTN employees remanded for defrauding people using ministers’ telephone lines

Two MTN telecom company employees have been remanded to Luzira prison after being charged with unauthorized blocking of simcards and defrauding people using telephone lines belonging to Lands minister, Persis Namuganza and minister for Agriculture, Christopher Kyebazanga.

Nasser Kigenyi, a service customer adviser and Henry Mugambe, a sales man both attached to MTN -Mubende -Kyegegwa Branch appeared before Buganda road court grade one magistrate Samuel Kagoda on Monday and denied nine counts including Electronic fraud, computer misuse , unauthorised blocking of simcards and conspiracy to defraud.

Court also heard that the two used Youth MP Mwine Mpaka and Mercy Kyankunda’s simcards to defraud unsuspecting members of the public in their victims’ contact lists.

They were remanded to Luzira prison until March 15, 2018 as inquiries into the case continue.

Prosecution led by Nelly Asiku states that in February this year, the suspects while in Kampala and Mubende unlawfully swapped simcard numbers; 0782670551 belonging to minister Namuganza, 0772970393 belonging to minister Kyebazanga, 0783799892 belonging to MP Mwine and 07726679365 belonging to Kyankunda and allowed fraudsters to use them after blocking the lawfully registered owners.

It’s further alleged that the suspects stole huge sums of money from the unsuspecting members of the public whom they would send Sms while pretending to be the registered users.
