2018 will observe 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela and to honour his centenary the South African Reserve Bank to launch commemorative banknotes.
The central bank announced this in a statement on the occasion of 28th anniversary of the day when Mandela was released from the prison.
The statement added that it will release 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 rand denominations.
New and old currencies will continue circulating together, Central bank of South Africa.
Sunday marked the 28 the anniversary of the day Mandela was released from the prison after spending 27 years in prison; also on this day, Mandela delivered his iconic speech from the balcony of the City Hall to thousands of people.
Nelson Mandela was one of the most prominent political leaders of South Africa who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
He was the country’s first black head of state and first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
South Africa will celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela this year.
Mandela was a revered world icon for his fight against the racism and for South Africa’s democracy and social justice.
